Password Hygiene in Times of Pandemic (and Always)

When did you last change your password for Zoom? If you can't remember, your account is in danger. With the massive shift to remote work, password security has never been more critical.

The Rise of Remote Work Security Threats

The pandemic forced millions of workers to suddenly operate from home, often using personal devices and home networks that lack enterprise-level security. Cybercriminals quickly adapted, targeting these vulnerabilities with increased phishing attacks and credential stuffing.

Essential Password Practices

Strong password hygiene is your first line of defense against unauthorized access. Here are the key practices every employee should follow:

1. Use Unique Passwords for Every Account

Never reuse passwords across multiple services. When one service is breached, hackers immediately try those credentials on other popular platforms. A password manager makes this manageable.

2. Make Passwords Long and Complex

Aim for at least 12 characters mixing uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Better yet, use a passphrase—a series of random words that's easier to remember but hard to crack.

3. Enable Two-Factor Authentication

Whenever possible, enable 2FA on your accounts. Even if your password is compromised, attackers won't be able to access your account without the second factor.

4. Change Passwords After Any Breach

If you hear about a data breach at a service you use, change your password immediately—don't wait for the company to notify you directly.

5. Avoid Password Hints

Security questions and password hints are often easily guessable or discoverable through social media. Avoid them when possible, or use random answers stored in your password manager.
